Most parents know children’s oral health basics: brush regularly, reduce sugar intake, limit snacks, plenty of calcium, and see the dentist for a checkup and teeth cleaning twice a year. At Dennis J. Coleman DDS in Davidson NC, we recommend three additional tools:
โข Sealants
โข Fluoride supplements
โข Oral rinses
Dental sealants are thin covering of plastic material we apply to the chewing surface of molars. They act as an extra layer of protection against the bacteria and acids that lead to cavities.
Fluoride supplements help strengthen young teeth, even before they begin to come in. They make them harder, too, and therefore more resistant to decay. Always use a fluoridated toothpaste.
Oral Rinses.ย If your child is taking fluoride supplements, is an oral rinse redundant? Nope! Fluoride supplements help strengthen teeth that are still forming, but a fluoride rinse helps teeth that have already come in. Make sure you look for an oral rinse formulated for children. Products labeled as a mouthwash are usually intended only for breath-freshening and may not contain fluoride.
For any over-the-counter oral care product, be sure to read the label carefully, and follow instructions.
