Today’s post focuses on something that happens occasionally, when patients requests cosmetic dentistry from their Davidson NC dentist.
Let’s say a patient comes in for a consultation about a smile makeover. We’ll call this hypothetical patient Mr. Jones. We listen carefully as Mr. Jones explains the esthetic problems that he wants to remedy. He wants to fix two chipped teeth, get a dental implant to replace another tooth, and whiten his whole smile. He describes what he envisions for his smile after undergoing treatment.
We perform an examination of his entire mouth and takes x-rays. We discover some issues Mr. Jones didn’t know about. There are three teeth with moderate decay, one with acute decay, signs of gum disease, an old crown with a crack in it, and severe bone recession at the potential dental implant site where his missing tooth was extracted ten years ago.
We explain that these issues need to be addressed before the smile redesign is performed. Mr. Jones says that the smile makeover is his first priority and plans to deal with the other problems sometime in the future.
What do we tell Mr. Jones? He needs to understand that the lasting success of cosmetic dentistry, such as dental veneers or teeth whitening, depends on the condition of the mouth at the time of treatment. There must be a solid, healthy foundation, so to speak, on which to build the smile makeover.
Can Mr. Jones ever have his dream smile? Yes! There are treatments to repair all of his issues. But like so many things, the order of operations is critical.
