Gum & Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental health, whether good or bad, can affect the state of your whole body. You deserve great health. Our goal is to help you achieve that through quality dental care.
Gum disease is one of the most common oral problems and a top reason for tooth loss in adults. It not only inflames the gums, causes bone recession, and threatens the teeth, but can also cause bodily infection which is linked to heart disease and other health problems. But there’s good news! If we catch gum disease early, it’s easy to reverse.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by a bacterial film called plaque. This film accumulates around the gum line every day, causing inflammation. Regular brushing, flossing, and good hygiene habits usually keep this at bay.
Unfortunately, any plaque that gets missed or ignored will eventually harden into a mineralized form called tartar. This substance cannot be cleaned off at home. Only a thorough professional cleaning will do the trick.
During your regular visits, our professionals will clean away any tartar buildup and check for signs of periodontal disease.
Stages of Gum Disease
- Gingivitis: The first stage of periodontal disease is mild. It affects the gums and breath but is reversible. Signs of gingivitis can include:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums.
- Gums that bleed while you brush or floss.
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth.
- Periodontitis: When gingivitis is left untreated, periodontal disease goes deeper. It can cause bone loss, gum recession, and eventually tooth loss. Signs of periodontitis include everything listed for gingivitis, as well as the following:
- Receding gums.
- Loose teeth.
- Change in bite.
What Can I Do About Gum Disease?
We offer several advanced gum disease treatment programs. Just some of the available techniques are listed below.
Modular Periodontal Therapy® Certified
Dr. Dennis Coleman, DDS, has received special training in the treatment of gum disease. Using procedures and protocols known as Modular Periodontal Therapy®, Dr. Coleman, Dr. Dastrup and our dental team are able to tackle gum disease at a microbiological level. This means going beyond the simple cleaning of plaque and calculus by using advanced diagnostic tools and treatment modules.
If you would like to know how this system works, or ask any questions about treatment and scheduling, feel free to give us a call.
Oral DNA®
Our dentists use your oral tissue to diagnose, prevent, and treat gum disease. The Oral DNA® procedure is a salivary diagnostic test. Using DNA identifiers, it can actually label the type and concentration of bacteria that is causing your gum disease.
Once we know the specifics, we can compose a treatment plan that is meant to work specifically in your mouth.
